• The most important of course, is an allergic reaction. Its not impossible to develop allergies later in life, and therefore, even if you have no known skin allergies, it is crucial that you test any new fragrance or perfume on the inside of the arm, in a small area, before applying the scent all over the body. Take the perfume for a ‘test run' before wearing it to an event or social evening, where an allergic reaction to fragrances in those circumstances would not only cause some embarrassment, but may make it difficult to get treatment immediately. An extreme reaction, referred to as anaphylaxis, can be fatal, hence the importance of doing a skin allergy test with any new fragrance.
• Due to the chemical makeup of perfumes, they can be fairly astringent and damaging to jewellery. The strong compounds contained in the perfume for women may tarnish costume jewellery with a plastic or varnished coating, and so if jewellery of this nature is going to be worn, it's best not to apply perfume to those areas. If you are wearing a necklace for instance, focus the aromatic application to your wrists, behind the knees, and ankles rather. For a bracelet, avoid the wrist area, and dab some perfume along the neckline and other pulse points furthest from the wrists.
• The colorants and chemicals in women's and men's perfumes can have the tendency to either stain clothing permanently or temporarily. Avoid spraying perfumes directly onto any fabric, or garment, but if this should occur accidentally, take the garment off and wash immediately to eradicate any chance of the stain becoming permanent.
