Do different perfume ingredients evaporate at varying speeds.
If one has ever tested a fragrance and taken in the sweet aromas, only to find that later the scent has changed significantly, it is probably due to the evaporation speed of certain compounds to some degree. The various perfume ingredients and aromatics contained in a fragrance or perfume all have varying evaporation rates. As such, the fragrance will develop over time as the various evaporations occur, and eventually leaving the final scent of the fragrance for your enjoyment. These varying degrees of evaporation and the chemical contents referred to are the top, middle and base notes. A citrus aroma for instance, would evaporate quite quickly, and would therefore fall into the top note category. The earthy, woody scents are from the base notes, and in turn take much longer to evaporate and are most likely to remain long after the remaining notes have long evaporated.
