What are the main components of perfume.

As one would select a perfume for a friend based on their personality, so too do the fragrance components contained in a perfume, rely heavily on how that perfume or fragrance is to be used, or its intended use before deciding what should go into that particular perfume. From the days of early civilization, perfumes were prevalent and used in ceremonies of a religious or burial practice nature. These fragrances and aromatics were obtained by burning plant extracts and various woods. Perfumes for bodily use were formulated later by the using the same woods and extracts and mixing them with water and oils to create the beginnings of perfumes, as we know them now.

In present day, researchers and developers have formulated methods to extract oils from nature as needed for the manufacture of fragrances and perfumes. All perfumes contain the general plant and flower extracts and oils, some perfume animal essences for use as fixatives, and the basics of water and alcohol. Artificial compounds may also be found in fragrances and perfumes for the manufacture of new scents and the making of replica and imitation scents. Perfume is the more expensive between fragrances and perfumes, and would therefore be more concentrated when it comes to the various oil compounds. Due to the increased expense, perfume is manufactured to last longer since it has increased concentrations of the various mixes and possibly over one hundred chemical compositions. There have also been great strides made in the research of new ingredients in modern-day perfumes, and these include human sex pheromones, which are designed to attract the opposite sex.

Generally, the chemical elements contained in men's fragrances and perfumes for women today, are geared to stimulate the olfactory senses, whereas new developments have seen the introduction of pheromones as part of the compositions in scents. These pheromones energise the vomeronasal organ in the brain, which instigate messages of desire, thereby stimulating sexual desire.
