Why are adverse reactions to perfume so commonplace.
Fragrances and scents might not pose any risk to some, but the overwhelming chemical compounds found in fragrances, and the toxicity levels, which vary from person to person, may prove harmful, thereby causing allergic reactions. The chemical contents of most scents and perfumes contain no plant extracts and contain only mixtures of esters, (which are a reaction between an acid and an alcohol, with the elimination of water), and other particles which are laboratory produced. Common allergens are contained in synthetic fragrances, along with possible cancer-causing agents and carcinogens, which exacerbate usual reactions to chemical components. Everyone has a certain level of toxicity in their bodies, and those with high toxicity levels would be more prone to allergic or adverse reactions, whereas those with low toxicity levels could safely wear high concentrations of chemical compounds, without any reaction whatsoever. Synthetic components are of equal value to the perfumer, due to the expense of natural components. However, there are a few natural synthetics that are more stable that the natural components, and may therefore also induce more of a reaction on the skin with some wearers. It must be noted though, that original perfumes and fragrances do not use animal ingredients in their products, and as such, reactions may well occur if replica or imitation fragrances are used. Age also plays a defining role in the reaction to certain scents. For instance, young children or babies may react quite severely to strong fragrances, due to their sensitive skin and not having been previously exposed to astringent substances. As one gets older too, chemical changes in the body occur and perfumes that may not have caused a reaction before could tend to cause an adverse response. The inhalation of any toxic chemicals like smoking, or medication could also attribute to a reaction within the body and the effects will be evident when wearing perfume.
