Day 1: Hike in the Sonoran Desert and road-trip to Sedona.
Our trip begins today in Scottsdale, Arizona. Meet your guides and traveling companions at 8am at our host hotel in vibrant Old Town Scottsdale. After a brief orientation, we load into our private van and set out for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and our first hike along the Gateway Trail. Filled with cacti forests, diverse wildlife and the rugged McDowell Mountains, the preserve spans 30,000 acres and offers a perfect introduction to the Sonoran Desert ecosystem. After soaking up some desert sunshine, we continue on to Sedona, stopping at the iconic Chapel of the Holy Cross for a short visit. A local landmark, the chapel was built directly into a giant formation of red rock and remains open to people of all faiths as a refuge of tranquility and contemplation. Tonight, we enjoy our first dinner in one of Sedona’s great restaurants. Overnight in Sedona for three nights. Lunch and dinner included.
Hiking: 4.5 miles with 650’ elevation gain/loss; Transfer time: 3.5 hours.
Meals: D
Day 2: Summit a mesa, get up close and personal with ancient ruins in the Verde Valley, and explore a mining ghost town turned art oasis.
This morning, we get our first real taste of Sedona’s colorful, captivating geology on a hike up Brins Mesa. Following our experienced female guides, we climb through the red rock to a vantage point offering magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. Later this morning, we drive to Tuzigoot National Monument. This large excavated pueblo features prime examples of pottery, baskets, tools, weavings and demonstrations of how these ancient farmers and craftsmen lived a thousand years ago. The charming 19th-century mining town of Jerome is today’s final destination. Built on a 30-degree slope, many of Jerome’s buildings were ravaged by fires or slipped downhill over time. A revised building code finally required structures to be made only of masonry and the town now hosts art galleries and tasting rooms featuring local wines. Returning to Sedona in late afternoon, we have time to relax before gathering for another fun dinner with friends. All meals included.
Hiking: 4.5 miles with 1,000’ elevation gain/loss; Transfer time: 2 hours.
Meals: B, L, D
Day 3: Do sunrise yoga in the desert, hike a pioneer wagon trail, and use the afternoon to choose your own adventure (or nap spot).
A relaxing early morning yoga session begins the day on a delightful note. After breakfast, we head to the Huckaby Trailhead just above town and hike the Munds Wagon Trail following an old wagon road. Around each bend, an enchanting moment awaits—a fantastic vista, hummingbirds feeding at a blooming Ocotillo, or polished red, white and pink sandstone blended together to create a beautiful geological formation. Our guides work their magic and prepare a picnic lunch under the shade of a pinyon tree. This afternoon, we have the flexibility to choose our own adventure (while the activities are on your own, our guides provide transportation to your destination). Hike up the West Fork Trail in lovely Oak Creek Canyon, shop for local artwork or relax by the hotel pool and catch up on some vacation reading. Regardless of your choice, the spectacular red-rock landscape is never far from view. All meals included.
Hiking: 6 miles with 600’ of elevation gain/loss (not including any optional hikes this afternoon).
Meals: B, L, D
Day 4: Hike lush meadows and red-and-gold hills in Red Rock State Park, witness the mysterious cliff city of Montezuma Castle National Monument, and return to Phoenix.
We bid farewell to Sedona this morning and set off for Red Rock State Park, a 286-acre nature preserve filled with stunning scenery. Trails in the park wind through manzanita and juniper, and green meadows are framed by hills of striated red and gold sandstone. Oak Creek flows through the park, creating a riparian habitat brimming with plants and wildlife. Following a series of interconnecting trails, we learn about the geology of the Colorado Plateau and some of the fascinating adaptations that plants and animals have made to survive in this environment. En route back to Phoenix this afternoon, we stop at Montezuma Castle National Monument, a cliff dwelling located in a high alcove above Beaver Creek. Its purpose is still debated by archaeologists—was it a fortress, a religious center? We arrive back in Phoenix between 4:30-5:30pm. Please do not schedule departing flights before 7:30pm. Breakfast and lunch included.
Hiking: 3-5 miles with 300’ of elevation gain/loss; Transfer time: 3 hours.

End place: Park Shore Waikiki
