Escape to a beachy oasis for eight days of adventure, connection and magic by the sea. Perfect for nature-lovers and mermaids at heart, this trip begins in the coastal village of Todos Santos, where we recharge in spacious hotel suites overlooking the ocean. Between desert dunes and glassy waves, against the backdrop of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range, we surf, hike, meet area artists, savor a farm-to-table lunch with the women of a local community garden, and volunteer with kids at a local nonprofit. Then we travel to our deluxe beach camp on Espiritu Santo Island in the Sea of Cortez. Think sunshine, white sand and sapphirine water so rich with life that Jacques Cousteau called this “the world’s aquarium.” Welcome to the tropical desert island of your daydreams. Beginning with morning yoga, our days here flow with the tides and moods of the sea. We kayak and paddleboard on crystalline lagoons, hike amongst canyons and cacti, and snorkel with curious sea lion pups. On day seven, we toast Baja’s beauty and behold one last soul-stirring sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

Day 1: Arrive in Todos Santos, Mexico.

Start place: Gulf of Mexico

Our trip begins today at the airport in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. From here, we transfer to the charming town of Todos Santos, a small but vibrant coastal village. The location of tonight’s lodging affords magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. Comfortable and spacious rooms provide the perfect place to relax after traveling. Tonight we will have our group orientation and dinner at our hotel. Dinner tonight is included.
Day 2: Take surfing lessons, historical city tour and visit an art gallery.
Looking for a way to change up your workout routine? Well this morning’s surfing lesson just may do that. We hit the beach and learn how to stand on our boards with expert instruction. In no time, we will ride a wave, at least for a moment, before our lesson ends! All levels of experience can do it.
This afternoon we stroll through the town of Todos Santos and discover her rich and varied history. The missionaries, sugar mills and agriculture center have given way to a thriving artists’ community and surfing hotspot. On this guided tour we will visit many of the historic buildings throughout town, learning fascinating stories of the global forces and colorful personalities that brought these buildings into existence and shaped Todos Santos over the years. We finish our tour at a local gallery and have an opportunity to talk with the resident artist. All meals included.
Meals: B, L, D
Day 3: Be an English-language tutor.
Today we transfer to a trail head located at Punta Lobos, where the local fishermen of Todos Santos launch their boats each morning and bring in their daily catch each afternoon. A quick walk up the hill brings us to breath-taking views of a dramatic coastline. From our vantage point, we can see almost 70 miles of beach stretching to the north. Throughout the walk we will have the stunning combination of desert landscape on one side and ocean views on the other. At the end of our hike, we arrive at the idyllic beach of San Pedro where a picnic lunch will be waiting.
Later today, we visit the Palapa Society, a Mexican non-profit that has been making life better for the children of Todos Santos since 2003. Here we have an opportunity to pair up with a student learning English. No previous teaching experience is required! All meals included.
Easy hiking: 2 miles

Day 4: Travel from Todos Santos to Espirtu Santo Island.
This morning we prepare for our departure to Espiritu Santo Island and our beach camp. Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the Sea of Cortez, a UNESCO World Heritage site. From our camp, we’ll discover why this island is a wonder of natural conservation and evolution.
To experience the full measure of Baja’s marine splendor, getting acquainted with sea kayaking is a must. Before we set out on our first paddling adventure our guides will offer us a thorough introduction to the activity. When the conditions are right and we’re comfortable in our boats, we’ll look forward to a full day of adventure. Please note: expect that on some days, Baja’s “Norte” (North wind) will make paddling conditions unfavorable. Our guides will take weather into account and plan for the best activity suitable if we incur strong winds. All meals included.
Activities may include kayaking, hiking, snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding: 2-3 hours
Note: Deluxe camping in safari-style tents includes bed with linens, bedside table and lanterns for nighttime reading.

Day 5: Kayak and practice yoga on Espiritu Santo Island.
We begin our day with a relaxing yoga session. After a hearty breakfast, our guides will share our options for the day. Our itinerary is flexible to respond to the best weather conditions. Activities include sea kayaking, snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding and hiking. On our kayaking outings, expect to spend 2-5 hours paddling in total, with time in the boat split up by short hikes, meal breaks and snorkeling opportunities. Before dinner, we’ll celebrate the day’s activities with a festive happy hour and toast to the beautiful nature surrounding us. All meals included.

Day 6: Travel from the Sea of Cortez back to the Pacific Ocean.
Snorkeling with the sea lion pups at the permanent sea lion colony of Los Islotes is one of life's greatest experiences. After we don our snorkeling gear and enter the water, young and inquisitive sea lions swim out from the rocks to join us. They pirouette below and around us in the water as their curiosity gets the better of them. After a little “play time”, we swim through two large rock islets, one of which is a natural arch. Below the water’s surface, we see orange fan and white fire coral swaying in the current and sea horses clinging to ribbons of seaweed. Above water, common brown boobies perch on the cliffs of the rock islets. This afternoon, we break camp and head back to Todos Santos. All meals included.
Activities may include kayaking, hiking, snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding: 1-2 hours

Day 7: Meet local potters in a true mountain oasis.
Today we visit a family at their working ranch nestled in the mountains of Baja Sur. We watch and learn from Doña Ramona, who imparts her experience and little tricks for working with the local clay. She also shares stories from her family's life in the mountains. Afterwards, we make traditional tortillas to accompany our lunch. Before making our way back to Todos Santos, we walk around the ranch's property for a more intimate look at this time-honored way of life. All meals included.
