Costa Rica Escape
6 days from Liberia to Liberia
From $ 2599
Duration6 days

Spend six days playing in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province, an off-the-beaten-path paradise of volcanoes, cloud forests and jungle waterfalls. Our Costa Rica Adventure strikes the perfect balance of thrill and chill. Starting with a stay at an award-winning eco-lodge near Rincon de la Vieja National Park, we explore an otherworldly geothermal landscape where the earth itself bubbles and boils. Then we refresh our spirits with blue swimming holes, an exhilarating treetop zipline tour and a float down a tropical river. Along with natural beauty, our bilingual local guides help us soak up the regional vibe, which blends the culture of the native Chorotega people with Spanish and African influences. After three days, we travel to laid-back Playa Carrillo to immerse ourselves in sun and sea. Depending on the tides, we behold the coral reef via kayak, snorkel or stand-up paddleboard. Finally, an open afternoon allows you to choose an optional surfing lesson or simply stretch out on the sand—whatever gives you that pura vida feeling. This is a great trip for adults and fit, older teens. If you're traveling with younger children, check out our Costa Rica Family Adventure.

Day 1: Pura Vida! Our ultimate adventure begins in Liberia.

Start place: Liberia

Upon arrival, we will be met at the Liberia, Costa Rica, airport. Our 45-minute transfer to our hotel near the Rincon de la Vieja National Park gives us time to meet our fellow travelers. Before dinner tonight, our guide will prep us for the week to come. Plan to arrive in Liberia before 3pm. Dinner included.
Meals: D
Day 2: Waterfalls, swimming holes and zip-line tour.
After breakfast this morning, we walk through a dry tropical forest to Chorrera Falls and a beautiful swimming spot. This alluring waterfall meets up with the Blanco River to create an enticing blue pool at its base where we are tempted to jump in for a quick soak. We continue from there to our adrenaline pumping portion of the program. For the next two hours, we zip-line and rappel through the canyon and forest and explore the tree canopy as we make our way across a hanging bridge. After a relaxing lunch, get ready for some more exhilaration as we find ourselves floating down a river in big inflatable tubes. We bounce and splash through class II and III rapids. There are many quiet sections along the river where we can appreciate the surrounding beautiful tropical scenery. All meals included.
Walking: 2 miles; zip-lining: 2 hours; tubing: 3 hours.

Day 3: Walk among hot springs and fumaroles.
From our award-winning eco lodge, we are within close proximity to a world of adventure. Our short transfer takes us to the entrance of Rincón de la Vieja National Park, a must-see Costa Rican paradise. From its active volcanos and rich earth to its picture postcard waterfalls, this national park is perfect for any outdoor or wildlife enthusiast. Our hike today takes us through a geothermal area filled with boiling hot mud springs and fumaroles. Smooth gray volcanic mud bubbles and explodes in large pits. It’s an experience like no other volcano in Costa Rica. After lunch, we hike to Cangreja Falls. Dissolved copper salts give the waterfall a celestial blue color and a small pool at its base is wonderful for cooling off after our hike. All meals included.
Hiking: 8.5 miles.
Meals: B, L, D
Day 4: Travel from dense rainforest to spectacular beaches.
Before breakfast, choose to rise early for birdwatching. If time allows, we walk to a look-out point where you can see the Rincón de la Vieja and Santa Maria volcanoes along with the Pacific Coastline. After breakfast, we travel to the stunning shores of Playa Carrillo. Unlike the developed beaches further to the north, Playa Carrillo is quiet and relaxed. After checking into our accommodations for the next two evenings, we gear up for this afternoon’s water activity. We have the option of kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and snorkeling at Samara Beach. There is a stunning coral reef that lies just offshore. All meals included.
Transfer: 3.5 hours; Kayaking or stand up paddle boarding: 2-3 hours.
Please note - based on conditions of the tide, this afternoon’s activity may vary in order to maximize our time and experience out on the water.

Day 5: Kayak to Isla Chora and snorkel among a coral reef.
Today, after our breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to our launch site for our sea kayaking and snorkeling adventure at Isla Chora. Lunch today includes lots of local flavor and a true Guanacaste experience. This afternoon is free. Join in on an optional surfing lesson, more snorkeling or relaxing on the beach. The choice is yours. All meals included.
